Veteran Resurrections
Over the course of the off-season, I don’t get to write every column idea I have. One article that didn’t make the cut this summer was a piece on veteran resurrection candidates. Last year, the best sleepers in fantasy football weren’t the cool up-and-coming players. Most of the young turks disappointed. The best sleepers were players everyone was tired of: Terry Glenn, Joey Galloway, Keenan McCardell, Santana Moss, Kurt Warner, and Drew Bledsoe come to mind.
With that in mind, here’s a list of candidates that make sense as sneaky veteran resurrections.
Eric Moulds, HOU WR
Moulds, 33, caught 81 passes on the 2005 Bills, which is an accomplishment. Now he’ll play the Rod Smith role in Gary Kubiak’s Houston offense. As a WR4 in fantasy leagues, he should be a very consistent option. This ADP keeps him out of the top forty wideouts.
Isaac Bruce, STL WR
There are serious doubts that Bruce can play 16 games, but he’s always been productive per-game, the Jamie Martin Experience notwithstanding. He makes a solid reserve fantasy wideout.
Marty Booker, MIA WR
Booker is only 30, and showed he can go deep last season. Booker has never played with an average quarterback yet is consistently productive. Daunte Culpepper will help him and Miami doesn’t have a true No. 3 option. Booker is going undrafted in most leagues but makes for a great WR5/6.
Jamal Lewis, BAL RB
Lewis isn’t going as late as I’d expect, especially after taking him in the fifth round of our magazine’s draft. No one has any idea if he can rebound, but I think it’s worth the gamble after the top forty picks. He doesn’t have true competition for carries.
Jon Kitna, DET QB
He’s going a little later than Kurt Warner did last season. The main difference? Kitna doesn’t have Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald to throw to.
Laveranues Coles, NYJ WR
Santana Moss was drafted around this slot a year ago coming off a rough season with the Jets offense. Coles managed 845 yards and five scores touring with the Brooks and Vinny show last season, so it’s not hard to imagine a 1,100-yard revival if Chad Pennington’s arm doesn’t fall off.
Some other players who are candidates for veteran resurrections that don’t appear to be as good values: Keyshawn Johnson, Brett Favre, Steve McNair, Corey Dillon, Duce Staley, Joe Horn, and Muhsin Muhammad.
