Benson Punished For Leaving Sidelines

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) -- Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson has been punished by coach Lovie Smith for leaving the sidelines during Friday night's preseason win over San Diego, and for missing a mandatory postgame meeting.

"Cedric was supposed to have been on the sideline like the rest of our football team and he wasn't," Smith said.

Smith wasn't specific about a fine or suspension for Benson. He also said the situation won't necessarily hurt Benson's attempt to win the starting tailback spot from Thomas Jones.
