Podcast: WR Sleepers And Busts

On this episode: Why Joe Jurivicius’ move to Cleveland won’t help his fantasy value, why you should walk on by Javon Walker, the effect of Joe Horn’s age, you don’t need to avoid Baltimore receivers anymore, why Terry Glenn’s not chopped liver, why Lee Evans might be the only salvagable part of the Buffalo offense, how Eric Moulds’s move helps Andre Johnson, and why Steve has learned how to pronounce TJ Houshmandzadeh’s name. Plus: We get a response to whether a snake or straight draft is good for a keeper league, why you should avoid Green Bay RBs, who to look for at the end of your draft, and who to take with the 4th overall pick following TJ Duckett’s arrival in Washington. Brandon Jacobs Impressive In Preseason

Brandon Jacobs, the Giants backup tailback, looks to be in top form this preseason. By halftime of Thursday night's game against the Patriots, Jacobs had scampered his way to 98 yards and a TD on just 10 carries. His first TD of the night comming after breaking a tackle and making a nice cut up the middle to free himself for a 57 yard TD. He continued to dominate the field in the second half to tack on another TD from 3 yards out for a total of 5TDs for the '06 preseason thusfar.

Fantasy Spin: Jacobs, the Giants second-year tailback out of Southern Illinois, is great insurance for Tiki Barber owners. Potentially, Jacobs could become the future starting running back of the N.Y. Giants either through injury to Barber or progression. He's a force at 260+ pounds. In 2006 look for him to take 5-7 TDs from Tiki Barber around the goaline.

Plenty Of Questions About The Colts' Running Game

As the preseason has played out, there has been much speculation over Addai's ability to fill the running back position vacated by James. Many Colts fans have complete faith in Polian and believe if he thinks Addai is the man for the job, then Addai is the man for the job. Others believe that Dominic Rhodes will take the reins and be the breakout rusher that he was never allowed to be while sitting behind James on the depth chart. Still, others think that neither man will live up to the expectations and the Colts' running game will suffer. Read more

Vince Young May Start

While Kerry Collins will see action at Green Bay, it's beginning to look like Vince Young will start for the Titans. Coach Jeff Fisher, who has said Young might start a preseason game, wouldn't commit to that on Wednesday even after the rookie's workload was increased.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler were chosen one after the other in the draft, and have impressed in their first taste of the NFL.

Before they settle in as backups to Kurt Warner and Jake Plummer, respectively, to start the regular season, the two rookies and future franchise quarterbacks get to show their stuff when the Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos meet in their preseason finale on Thursday night.

Players On The Rise, Players On The Slide

Dave Richard
Senior Fantasy Writer

If you're like me, you'll be lying on your couch watching preseason football non-stop this weekend thinking about your own Fantasy leagues with a big bowl of cereal resting on your belly while your wife's yelling at you to get off your rear and clean the garage.

OK, maybe you won't be exactly like me.

Point is, there's a lot to look for in the second week of preseason games. The starters will play more -- some up to one half instead of a few reps -- and NFL head coaches will begin the process of mentally keeping and cutting players based on what they've done on the field. A lot can be learned here.

Here are some players -- some hot, some cold -- to keep tabs on for the week's slate of games...Read article

Truth & Rumors

Word is the Bears might be interested in Patriots holdout Deion Branch but are unwilling to surrender the high draft pick or pay the big-money contract to get that done. But if Cowboys coach Bill Parcells tires of Terrell Owens' act, he might be the answer for the Bears.
-- Chicago Sun-Times

From the division of the work during practice to the amount of their paychecks, the Titans are preparing Kerry Collins -- not Billy Volek -- to start as early as the season opener against the Jets. Collins was with offensive coordinator Norm Chow until 11 p.m., going over concepts and watching film. Collins was clearly rusty, but made some nice throws as well.
-- The Tennessean

Matt Leinart's preseason performances not only have boosted his confidence, they've increased the faith his teammates have in him, said coach Dennis Green. Green hasn't named Leinart the backup to Kurt Warner, but it'll be no surprise when he does.
-- Arizona Republic

J.P. Losman was officially named the Bills' starting quarterback Tuesday in a move that was reduced to a formality after the former first-round pick clearly emerged from a three-way battle this summer for the No. 1 job.

Rotoworld: Tiers Of Heaven 2006: 2.0

When the big day arrives, every owner wants a cheat sheet to reference. If you haven’t purchased Rotoworld.com's online draft guide, they humbly submit their annual “Tiers of Heaven” column for printout usage.

RotoWorld’s tiering system is designed to help make the toughest decisions on draft day. They've ranked every draftable player by position and grouped them in “tiers” or similar value. Most owners can pick between Kevin Jones and Julius Jones. It becomes much tougher to decide whether to pick your favorite Jones or a wide receiver like Torry Holt.

Tiering can help establish a loose strategy before the draft. Then, as the draft goes to hell, the tiers will help maximize value as the rounds go by. Read "Tiers Of Heaven"

Preseason With A "Grain Of Salt"

The NFL 2006 preseason is almost over, and with the NFL kicking off it's regular season in about a week, it's time to pinch ourselves and look back at some lasting impressions. Now, I was fortunate to catch a handful of games, although I'm feeling very unloved now that the Sunday Night Football games have moved to the NFL Network, but that's another story. What IS important is to take these preseason performances "with a grain of salt". Especially when putting your middle to late round picks on names that were competing against opposing 2nd and 3rd string units. On the other hand, there are some performances in the preseason that can translate as truths:

  • Reggie Bush is the real deal. He won't put up RB1 numbers this year, but he has great upside and will produce tremendously for years to come. Texans, start kicking yourselves! Harder!
  • Dante Culpepper is back from major knee surgery and has put himself in a really good situation to get back to the playoffs. The same goes for Carson Palmer. Wow, very impressive in his first preseason game showing great confidence in his reconstructed knee and returning to what he's used to -- picking apart defenses.
  • Lawrence Moroney (R) may be the steal of the '06 draft. He shows great burst up through the line of scrimmage and breaks tackles. Look for him to steal 6-10 carries a game from starter Corey Dillon.
  • Tight Ends are stepping their game up. After Antonio Gates, Jeremy Shockey and T-Gonzo get picked up, 2006 brings great second-tier talent with potential for breakout years from people like Ben Watson, Alge Crumpler, Chris Cooley, Randy McMichael, and rookie standout Vernon Davis come to mind. Anyone of these guys can create separation from defenders and should make substantial contributions to their respective teams.
But there seems to be more questions marks than definite answers around the league. Where do I start?
  • Quarterback situations: Bills, Jets, Titans, Raiders, Redskins, Bears all have questionable situations at the QB position. With the exception of the Bears, it's hard for me to see any of these teams in the postseason.
  • Cedric Benson or Thomas Jones? The coaches say Benson, but the players want Jones.
  • Will the Mike Martz system work for the Lions?
  • Brett Farve...How much longer will he hold down the starting job? Jake Plummer is feeling the heat too with rookie Jay Cutler looking veteran-like early in his NFL career.
  • How many people have hamstring injuries? I'm not going to count...
  • Can the Cardinals live up to expectations?
  • Will this be yet another year of rebuilding for the 49ers, Browns, Saints, Jets?
  • T.O....well, T.O. will always be T.O.
I'm not going around the entire league, but you get the point. One things for sure, the NFL brings unpredictability like no other league; one of the many reasons why this game is like no other. I'm excited -- Herm Edwards is excited. I would be too if I were coaching a horse like Larry Johnson. Now, count the days down with me...8...7...6...

Heeeeeere's Carson

After months of rehab, quarterback Carson Palmer has made a successful return to the football field as the Bengals are hosting the Packers LIVE on ESPN. GameCenter

Preview: Pats' Offense Is Sinking, But Brady's Constant

The New England Patriots ' offense utilized the third week of the preseason to pummel their opponent, the Washington Redskins , into submission on Saturday, winning 41-0. In total, the unit ended with 464 total yards against the Redskins' vaunted defense. This season, its hoping to do the same thing against regular season opponents.

Nobody's better at the quarterback position than the Patriots. Period. Six-year veteran Tom Brady is simply the greatest winner to come along since Joe Montana, as his three Super Bowl and four division titles would suggest. Expect Brady, who has thrown at least 23 touchdown passes in each of the last four seasons, to continue on his pace of making those around him better.

Walker Catches First Passes Since Knee Injury

Taking a year off from all the hits rejuvenated the Denver Broncos wide receiver, even if he had to endure rehabbing a torn ligament in his right knee.

Still, Walker was eager to make that initial reception for Denver. So eager, in fact, that he got a little excited when it finally happened.

When Walker hauled in a 16-yard catch during the Broncos' 17-14 win over Houston on Sunday, he sat on the turf for a moment - to make sure his knee felt all right - and then bounded up, spun the ball and flashed a giant smile.

"I was just letting everyone know I was out there," Walker said.

Rotoworld: 18-Round Mock Draft Analysis

One monster weekend of fantasy football drafts is now complete. This week will be even bigger, so it’s time to fine-tune your last-minute strategies.

One of the best ways to prepare for the big day is to look closely at some fantasy football “industry” drafts. I participate in a few, but the most useful every season is the SOFA (Site Owners Fantasy Association) classic draft listed below.

This draft is valuable for two reasons. First, the draft took place on Wednesday, August 23rd. Most of the mid-summer drafts for magazine publications are now stale. This one is perfectly timed for new trends. The second reason is the quality of owners. The Huddle rounds up twelve great teams from around the industry, ensuring a very “tight” draft where draftable players rarely fall far below their value. To view the draft & analysis click here

Jaguars RB Jones Has Torn ACL, Out For Season

The Jacksonville Jaguars' backfield suffered a setback Monday when an MRI exam revealed that versatile third-year veteran Greg Jones has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and is lost for the season.

The injury to Jones, a youngster poised for an expanded role in 2006, had originally been diagnosed as a sprained medial
collateral ligament after he hurt his knee in Saturday's preseason game. While that would have kept Jones off the field for a while, there
was some hope he would be able to return in time for the Sept. 10 season opener. A subsequent MRI, however, showed more
damage than anticipated. Read more
