Smith Can See Clearly Now -- And Likes The View

SAN FRANCISCO -- The hobgoblins and cobwebs that once jammed Alex Smith's head seemed to have been exorcised. You can see the difference, almost taste it, in the way he walks, in the way he talks and most of all, in the way he plays football.

The word last season on the San Francisco 49ers quarterback was that he was not worth the sky-high draft pick and financial expenditure. That he had a weak arm, a soft head, and was the product of a fancy and deceptive Utah offense that made him look like Joe Montana but in reality he was more like Joe Mantegna.

The whispers grew that Smith was rapidly entering bust territory and towards the end of the season those whispers reached an attack ad level of cacophony. The fact he was a rookie playing the most complicated position in all of sports was lost on some.

Smith won't admit it, but the criticism got to him.

"It really bothered him that people said he was overrated or that he wasn't any good," said 49ers wide receiver Antonio Bryant. "A person in that situation is either going to break or break records. Alex is going to break records." Read More
