The 'ish on T.O.

Terrell Owens

Warm weather year-round, a decent surrounding cast, a hall of fame head coach now add in the NFL's most contreversial player - Terrell Owens. Hmmm, a tasty recipe for either something real good in 2006. He's a pure specimen and a rare standout amongst the zenith of dominant American athleticism today toting one of the most intimidating physiques in sports today. For Dallas fans, the potential for the coveted Lombardi trophy is there. Jones and Parcells have made their move. Would I want him on my team? I'm not too sure I could take too much of his sh*t, but do I want him on my fantasy football team? Hell Yeah!

As a fan of the sport in general, I just want to see the guy on the field on Sundays. Last year was nothing but a waste of time for Owens (as a player, publicity is a whole other story), but this year he's poised to make a great comeback with the Dallas Cowboys who have a solid team for '06. I think he's had his share of the spotlight off of the field, he has got to be hungry to play ball by now. And let's not forget the plays both of his old teams...Philly gets him twice!

Times are good in Dallas. The Cowboys aquired the biggest free agent this offseason in Owens, use their first draft pick on Anthony Fasano (an excellent tight end out of Notre Dame), tightened-up their "O" line, re-sign and secure their All-pro safety Roy Williams through 2010... (the list goes on and on.)

Owens, the No.4 all-time receiver (in terms of touchdown receptions), has accumilated six 1,000-yard seasons and has five straight Pro Bowl appearances. As the Cowboys' number one wideout, he's strong, durable and proven. He can drive cornerbacks downfield on running palys, and demand double coverage on pass plays.

The big fantasy question remains: Do I want to risk drafting Terrell Owens? And if so when should I take him?

Fantasy GMs should consider a few things:
  1. He's the best talent for your pick. Most draft boards have him at or near 15th on the overall rankings.
  2. The only other wideout I would even consider before him is Chad Johnson who's catching from the super-talented QB Carson Palmer (who's coming off major reconstructive knee surgery).
  3. Unpredicatability - you never know when he's going to pop.
  4. The Cowboys may decide to stack the O-line with two tight ends sets to give Bledsoe some time in the pocket. This may result in more double coverage for him, but Bledsoe is no slouch, he'll get him the ball.
Owens joins a cast of strong-minded individuals including head coach Bill Parcells and the Cowboys ever-present owner Jim Jones. Personally, I can already smell the friction in the lockeroom, on the sidelines, and in the media, but I think he will do well in '06. By all indications, the No.4 all-time receiver (in terms of touchdown receptions) will have a fantastic '06 season. If you feel like taking the T.O. gamble, look to snatch him up with your second pick. If he manages to stay on the field for the entire season...tell the nay-sayers to "kiss the rings _____" and collect that league championship money!
